Skyhawks Scoreboard: Fort Lewis College soccer teams come up empty in Texas

Both teams return home 0-1-1

Freshman goalkeeper Peter Byrne earned his first collegiate shutout Sunday, but the Skyhawks couldn’t turn it into a victory Sunday.

Byrne made nine saves in the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team’s 0-0 draw against Texas A&M International in Wichita Falls, Texas. FLC is now 0-1-1 after the opening weekend of the season. The team also was shutout Friday night in a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Midwestern State.

FLC was outshot 21-7 on Sunday, including 9-4 on goal.

Both overtime periods and the final five minutes of regulation were played with both teams down a man because of a red card ejection. The Dust Devils were down to nine men after the first seven minutes of overtime, but FLC couldn’t make use of the 10-9 advantage in personnel.

The Skyhawks will try to get on track on their home Dirks Field at 3 p.m. Friday against St. Mary’s.

Women’s Soccer

The Fort Lewis College women’s team also is 0-1-1 after the opening two games of the season. Two days after a 2-2 draw at Eastern New Mexico, the Skyhawks fell 2-0 to West Texas A&M on Sunday in Canyon, Texas.

West Texas A&M (2-0) recived a goal in the 11th minute from Marlene van Mourik, when she got her foot on a rebound the get a shot in past FLC goalkeeper....

Calista Cordero added a late goal in the 88th minute to seal the win for the Buffs. She was assisted by Khadidra Debesette.

FLC was outshot 14-5, including 8-3 on goal.

Ali Miller and Britt Blomso split time in goal, each playing one half. Miller made two saves and allowed one goal, and Blomso made four saves and allowed one goal.

The Skyhawks will look for their first win at 1 p.m. Friday at home at Dirks Field on the FLC campus against Angelo State.
