Best bets for the weekend in and around Durango

Best bets this weekend in Durango include the Journey of Hope 5K Run/Walk and the 10th annual Apple Days Festival, and in Cortez, the Search & Rescue Fundraiser Dinner.

FRIDAY

Search & Rescue Fundraiser Dinner, 5 p.m., Destination Grill, 2121 E. Main St. in Cortez. Dine out and support Montezuma County Search & Rescue personnel. Wear camouflage or orange and a portion of your dinner cost will help pay for training classes and equipment for search and rescue teams. There will be door prizes sponsored by Osprey.

Canyons of the Ancients Artist in Residence Night Photography Presentation, 7 p.m. at the Visitor Center, 27501 Highway 184 in Dolores. Artist Lanny Wagner will show nighttime photography of the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument in Southwest Colorado. This is a free event.

SATURDAY

Journey of Hope 5K Run/Walk, 8 a.m. at Mercy Regional Breast Care Center, 1010 Three Springs Blvd., in Durango. The race starts at 9 a.m. for runners and 9:15 a.m. for walkers. Registration is $25 and will benefit the Mercy Health Foundation’s Journey of Hope Fund, which provides free mammograms to residents of Southwest Colorado in need of assistance.

Animas River Clean-Up, 9 a.m. at Santa Rita Park. Help clean up a large section of the Animas River Trail from Santa Rita to Dallabetta Park. Meet at Santa Rita to check in and get supplies. Lunch and prizes will be provided.

Apple Days Community Harvest, 9 a.m. at Buckley Park at the corner of 12th Street and Main Avenue. Meet at the park and head out to local orchards to pick apples. The harvest will be used at Sunday’s Apple Days Festival.

SUNDAY

Apple Days Festival, 11 a.m. at Buckley Park at the corner of 12th Street and Main Avenue. Come for apple tastings, activities for kids, food vendors, pie-eating contest, live music and more. This is an all-day event.

Free books from the Durango Book Rescue, noon to 5 p.m. at 923 Narrow Gauge Ave. in Durango. The Book Rescue will give away thousands of free books.
