The recent article in the Durango Herald about the large number of flight cancellations at our local airport was timely because of what recently happened to us (“
The article said they realize this is frustrating to customers, but to us it was far more than frustrating.
We booked an Alaska cruise several months ago which was to start with a flight out of Durango the morning of July 31. Upon arriving at the airport at 4:30 a.m. for a 6 a.m. flight, we were told the flight had been canceled. This caused all of our other connections to be canceled, including making it to the ship before departure. We then had to make all new arrangements to fly from Albuquerque the next day and meet the ship at one of its ports of call.
This not only caused us considerable extra expense, but also lost three days of the cruise.
We were told the flight was canceled because of thunderstorms in Denver the night before, and then later told it was mechanical issues. Whatever the real reason, they have to many cancellations, mostly from United Airlines.
It is because of the large number of cancellations that many people drive to Albuquerque or Denver to catch flights. We would strongly recommend that if you have to be somewhere in a timely manner, you should do the same. We certainly will from now on.
