Sandia Prep Sundevils stall Durango Demons boys soccer

Durango frustrated by defensive scheme

Sandia Prep stymied a potent Durango High School attack Thursday afternoon in Albuquerque.

The DHS boys soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against the Sundevils in the first of two games against private-school competition this week in New Mexico.

The defensive tactics of Sandia Prep frustrated the Demons, who were unable to score on their limited opportunities.

“They sat back and tucked it in,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “Very defensive. They made it to the point where they had eight to 10 guys sitting in their box. They weren’t even looking to score.”

Sandia Prep (5-6-2) didn’t register a single shot on the Durango goal, Parker said. Durango (7-1-2) was held to five shots on goal.

“When you go through all the possessions trying to break it down and then get an opportunity, you have to find a way to put at least one in the back of the net,” Parker said. “That part of the game we weren’t great at, but the rest of the game we were fine. We just couldn’t put the stupid thing in the net.”

Next up for the Demons is a match against Chaminade College Preparatory School from St. Louis at 3 p.m. Friday. The Red Devils (5-6-2) fell to Albuquerque’s La Cueva High School 2-1 on Thursday.

“They look like a big, physical team,” Parker said. “It will be a lot more fast-paced than today’s game.”
