Vets invited to health, wellness fair in Durango

Veterans and their families will have the opportunity to meet staff members of the Durango Veterans Administration Clinic and learn more about VA health care at a veterans health-and-wellness fair June 21.

Community partners also are invited to the event presented by the New Mexico VA Health Care System to learn more about VA benefits and patient co-management policies and procedures.

The health-and-wellness fair will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Durango VFW, 1550 Main Ave.

VA Clinic staff members will be available to answer questions, perform demonstrations and present information about resources to support vets in being a partner in their personal health care.

Nine healthy-living messages will be presented: be involved in your health care; get recommended screenings, tests and immunizations; eat wisely; be physically active; strive for a healthy weight; be safe; limit alcohol; manage stress; and be tobacco-free.

I also will be on hand to answer questions about the wide range of benefits available for veterans, service members and their families, and enroll veterans interested in the New Mexico VA Health Care System and the Durango VA Contracted Community Based Outpatient Clinic health-care services. All veterans interested in enrolling in VA health care should bring a copy of their discharge papers with them.

As the La Plata County veteran services officer, I encourage all veterans not using the VA Health Care System to come to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about VA heath care and see what a great free or low-cost health-care benefit you are missing out on.

We look forward to seeing you at the veterans health and wellness fair.

Richard Schleeter is the veterans service officer for the La Plata County Veterans Service Office. He can be reached at 759-0117 or schleeterrs@co.laplata.co.us.
