Durango baseball doomed by walks against Denver North

Denver trip starts with big loss

Two innings got away from the Demons on Tuesday, and that’s all it took against a much-improved team.

Durango High School’s baseball team fell 13-3 in five innings to Denver North in a game played at Metro State University-Denver.

Walks and errors cost the Demons, as the Vikings scored five runs in the fourth inning and seven more in the fifth to secure the victory.

“There were a handful of plays we ought to make that we didn’t,” DHS head coach Eric Baker said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.

A year ago, Durango beat Denver North 7-1 in Durango. Baker said the Vikings have improved quite a bit and hit the ball all over the park Tuesday.

The Demons (2-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the Vikings (5-0) tied it in the bottom half. Durango reclaimed the lead at 3-1 in the top of the third before the wheels fell off.

Peyton Woolverton drove in two and scored once to be involved in all three of the Demons’ runs. He was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Gavin Mestas was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Lawrence Mayberry scored the team’s other run on a 1-for-2 showing with one walk.

“Our offense played well enough to stay in the game,” Baker said. “We hit the ball hard, just sometimes right at the opposition.”

Andrew Selser started the game on the mound and took the loss. He allowed six hits and eight earned runs. He walked five and struck out three.

Woolverton came on in relief and didn’t record an out. He allowed four earned runs while walking four consecutive batters. Mayberry came in to record two outs, walking two and striking out one.

Durango will be off Wednesday and will practice at Metro State to prepare for a Thursday game against Pueblo Central.
