The Durango High School volleyball team had a simple scenario on Saturday in order to be crowned champions of the 5A/4A Southwestern League: beat Montrose at all costs.
The Demons were unable to do so, as the Indians swept DHS, 25-19, 25-9 and 25-23.
Montrose (16-3, 7-1 SWL) was able to neutralize Durango’s outside hitters, as the Demons combined for just 19 kills in the match. Millie O’Ketter paced DHS with six kills, while Sydney Summers had five. O’Ketter led DHS with 13 digs, and Leah Wesley, Paige Ammerman and Kyle Rowland each recorded 10. Emmy Romero and Ammerman recorded six assists.
Durango (11-7, 5-3) had two chances to lock up the league title, but in a matter of 24 hours, the Demons’ quest for their first league championship since 2012 came up short. DHS lost to Fruita Monument in five sets on Friday night.
“We didn’t play our best, and Montrose played well,” said DHS head coach Collen Vogt. “We still have a lot of volleyball and season left, so we will keep fighting to improve and get better.”
The Demons have one week left in the regular season. DHS will travel to Bayfield (14-4, 8-2 3A Intermountain League) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, before ending the regular season next Saturday at the Ponderosa Tournament.
The Ignacio High School volleyball team won its third consecutive game on Saturday, as the Bobcats swept Norwood on the road in straight sets.
Ignacio (11-8, 6-6 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) took care of the Mavericks in the three-set win, 25-21, 25-18 and 25-16. Statistics were not made available.
The Bobcats have three games remaining in the regular season, and will travel to Rye for the Rye Tournament next Friday.
