Bats don’t live up to hopes

Skyhawks split doubleheader with Mines

Asplit wasn’t what the Fort Lewis College softball team had in mind when it travelled to Golden to play Colorado Mines on Saturday.

FLC (17-15, 13-9 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) won its first game against the Orediggers 6-4 before losing 3-1 in the second.

“We have a certain expectation of ourselves in how we can put up runs,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said.

The Skyhawks manufactured runs in the first game.

“We played a lot of nice situational softball – putting down bunts, stealing bases, timely hits,” Zeiter said. “That was nice, especially when your bats aren’t roaring as normal.”

Kamali’i Peneku led FLC’s offense with three hits and two runs batted in while Destinee DeHerrera had two hits.

FLC scored three runs in the third inning and two in the seventh.

Victoria Johnson pitched 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

The Skyhawks only managed two hits as a team in their second game.

“Our bats were really quiet all day,” Zeiter said. “Softball’s a game of little things.”

Mines shortstop Courtney Derus hit a double in the bottom of the eighth inning to score two runs and force a split on the day.

FLC tied the game at one in the top of the sixth inning when DeHerrera singled Missy Fundora home.

Mines (10-17, 6-12 RMAC) took the lead in the bottom of the first on a Cassie Ford RBI single.

The Skyhawks will face the Orediggers in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Sunday in Golden.

“I think our team expects more of the way we can play,” Zeiter said. “We’re looking to bring out the bats (Sunday).”
