Concerning Tom Givon’s letter about the decline of Mercy Hospital since its acquisition by Centura (“
I would like, however, to separate the corporate misdeeds from the exceptional care I have received from the professional staff at Mercy.
I have recently suffered a shoulder injury and an infected wound in my finger, and have received treatment in the ER, Mercy Family Medicine, Mercy Orthopedic Associates and Mercy Integrated Physical Therapy. Out of respect for their privacy, I won’t name anyone, but every person I have dealt with has been knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and seemed to genuinely care about my well-being.
Notable examples include stopping by the orthopedic office to make an appointment, and because the intake person was concerned about my finger, being seen immediately by the doctor without an appointment; at a later date, having the same doctor and his physician’s assistant give up their lunch breaks to perform minor surgery on my finger; and having the physical therapist treating my shoulder bring out the hand specialist to look at my finger (just to be clear, I was receiving physical therapy only for my shoulder).
So while I am no lover of corporations, I wish to ensure that when we criticize Centura, we don’t paint the caring professionals at Mercy with the same broad brush.
