FLC office cuts down on cash it carries

December break-in major motivator for electronic transactions

Fort Lewis College announced Friday that, effective immediately, the campus cashier’s office is eliminating most of its cash transactions.

Personal checks of employees and students no longer will be cashed. Cash advances on student financial-aid refunds also will be discontinued.

The move to more electronic transactions already was being considered, FLC spokesman Mitch Davis said Friday.

But the catalyst was a break-in at the cashier’s office early Dec. 22 that netted about $9,200, he said.

Campus police arrived at the cashier’s office in Berndt Hall within four minutes of the alarm.

But the thieves were gone. The back door had been pried open.

The change of policy on cash transactions is an attempt to promote electronic options and cut the time students sometimes stand in line, Davis said.

Cash deposits and payments will continue to be accepted by the cashier’s office, but the money will be deposited daily, he said.

Little or no cash kept in the office, he said.
