Herald endorsed the wrong school board candidate

I disagree with The Durango Herald’s endorsement of incumbent Stephanie Moran for the Durango 9-R School Board District B seat.

In my opinion, Kristin Smith is a much better choice because she brings with her some key ingredients that are currently lacking on the board, which include: approachability coupled with a warm and welcoming attitude, a much needed fresh perspective (most notably as a current 9-R parent), an open-minded approach to feedback, knowledge of disability rights and the courage to prioritize our students’ wellbeing above all else.

I believe Ms. Smith will use her keen leadership skills to open up communication channels between 9-R administration, staff, families and our local community. She will prioritize involving staff in decisions directly affecting them and their students and has the courage to hold our superintendent accountable for his actions.

Ms. Smith is in our schools each and every school day and that alone gives her a leg up. Having her eyes and ears on the ground is a valuable resource.

As a fellow 9-R parent, former 9-R employee and local community activist, I urge you to vote for Kristin Smith. Her unique ability to create positive change for the betterment of all makes her the perfect choice for the Durango 9-R School Board and our community.
