LPEA is diligent and forward-thinking

On June 10, I attended a community meeting at La Plata Electric Association about the future of our power supply. It was well attended and led by staffer Ron Meier. It covered the topics of a possible Tri-State Generation and Transmission buy-out, future power supply options and the goal of reducing LPEA’s carbon footprint.

I was impressed by the forthright, diligent and forward-thinking investigation by the staff and directors, knowing that being environmentally and financially responsible is a priority. I was also impressed by the well informed engagement of our community in asking multitudes of good questions throughout the evening.

I was disappointed to read that Tri-State just voted to pursue federal regulation, despite requests for delay. Forging ahead with a possible LPEA buyout of our Tri-State contract may be hindered by this new move, which may be part of Tri-State’s strategy.

In April, it was reported that Tri-State participated with and funded a lobby firm that aimed to fight clean air rules and environmental protections, an action inconsistent with LPEA’s mission to be environmentally responsible.

I walked away with an appreciation of the direction LPEA is pursuing.
