Bears beat Bobcats for 2

Playing shorthanded with a group as young as Ignacio High School’s baseball team isn’t a recipe for success. The Bobcats lost 13-1 and 20-5 in a regular-season ending doubleheader against Dolores on Thursday in Ignacio.

Ignacio (3-14, 0-9 San Juan Basin League) typically starts five freshmen, but with two more experienced players ineligible because of grades Thursday, seven freshmen got the nod in the starting lineup.“The two that were missing were my pitchers, so we struggled a little bit on the field and hitting,” IHS head coach Lupe Huerta said. The Bears took advantage of a few Ignacio miscues and swung the bat well in general, Huerta said.

“They were hitting the ball well and then some mistakes on our part,” he said. “All in all, they were hitting the ball well.”The Bobcats’ head coach credited freshmen Tucker Ward and Anthony Manzanares for providing a lift in the second game. Ward went 3-for-3, while Manzanares added a pair of hits. “Good performance from Tucker Ward and Anthony Manzanares,” Huerta said.
