The Durango High School girls soccer team got after it from the opening kickoff Saturday afternoon against Skyline at Erie High School and was off to a lightning-quick start.
Sasha Kozak scored just 10 seconds into the match to give the Demons a 1-0 lead, and it would only get better from there, as they went on to win 4-1. Hannah Coster scored one of her two goals on the day at the five minute mark of the match and DHS took a 2-0 lead.
“We’re really excited, we played really well, and it was a great start,” DHS head coach Jonathan Berzins said. “It was a great effort on both sides of the ball. We responded well after last week.”
Durango (1-2) got its first win of the season, and added a third goal at the half-hour mark, when Jordan Reuille-Dupont found the back of the net. The Demons took a comfortable 3-0 lead into the locker room against the Falcons (0-1).
“Offensively, we were really clicking today,” Berzins said. “We were clinical when we had it in their half of the field, and it was just a great first half for us, and the second, we were also really strong on defense.”
In the second half, Coster would add her second and topped it off with Durango’s fourth goal in the 65th minute.
Senior Kayla Rubenstein had two assists, while Coster also added one, as well.
Durango will have two weeks off and will play against the Academy at 11 a.m. March 30.
The Bayfield High School girls soccer team could not handle second-half pressure from Manitou Springs after it went down at halftime 1-0. The Mustangs (2-1) exploded for six second-half goals, and once they got going, it was tough to stop them.
“We really hung with them in the first half, but then they scored a couple of goals and it deflated us a bit,” said BHS head coach Jen Moore. “They added a few more, and then that made us angry. We then played really well for the final five minutes or so, and if we put pressure on their keeper, it could’ve been better. But we were missing six players and knew it would be tough going in.”
BHS (1-2) got its lone goal from freshman Madison Oltmanns, who, with under five minutes remaining, broke through the back line and was in on goal and chipped the ball past the goalkeeper.
Senior midfielder Caileen Sienchnect scored three goals on the afternoon for the Mustangs, who finished with 32 shots along with nine corner kick attempts.
Bayfield will not play a match for three weeks. The team will square off against Del Norte at 4 p.m. April 5.
The Ignacio High School girls soccer team (0-1) opened its season Saturday afternoon but were unable to find the net in a 10-0 loss to Crested Butte at IHS.
Karina Davalos opened the scoring in the game’s opening minute, and the Titans (2-0) quickly went up 5-0 by the 11th minute, as Mya Schaffer scored twice in the span. It would go on to be 8-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Siena Truex scored in the 52nd minute and Stevee Reinhart scored her second of the day to make it 10-0 and end the match early in the 57th minute.
Ignacio will return to action against Pagosa Springs at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Pagosa Springs High School.
Baseball
BaseballThe Bayfield High School baseball team traveled to the Luke Oeltjenbruns Memorial Tournament hosted by Cedaredge for three games in two days Friday and Saturday, and the Wolverines returned home with two wins.
The Wolverines (3-3) opened play with a 7-5 win Friday against host Cedaredge. BHS then pounded Olathe 18-3 before a narrow 6-4 defeat to Montrose in the finale Saturday afternoon.
In the win against Cedaredge (1-2), Andrew Morgan went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in. Max McGhehey also went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Rhett Hoover was 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run, and Hub Brandon drove in one run and scored once.
Morgan was the winning pitcher in four innings of work. He allowed three hits and two earned runs. He struck out four and walked three.
Jake Brandon pitched two innings and struck out four and allowed two hits. Ethan Morris pitched one inning and was charged with three runs.
BHS then blasted the Olathe Pirates (0-3) with 12 hits, as Jake Brandon and Hoover each had three hits in the game. Dillon Vroman was 1-for-5 with four RBIs, and Jake Brandon was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Alec Demko scored four times in the game, as he was 2-for-4. BHS had four doubles in the game with one each from Demko, Hoover, McGhehey and Vroman. Demko also had a triple, as did Jake Brandon.
McGhehey pitched five strong innings, as he struck out 10 and allowed two hits. The three runs were all unearned. Hoover closed out the game and struck out two and walked two in two innings of hitless ball.
Against mighty Montrose (5-1), BHS tallied eight hits. Morris drove in two runs. Demko and Vroman each had two hits and one RBI. Demko and Hoover each had one double.
BHS pitcher Hayden Farmer took the loss despite allowing only three hits in three innings. Three BHS errors were costly. Farmer walked three and struck out one. Hub Brandon didn’t allow a run in three innings, as he allowed two hits and struck out two.
The Wolverines will look to get above .500 in the early season with a trip Tuesday to face San Juan High School (1-3) in Blanding, Utah. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
