A very important job of an elected school board official is to be the liaison between parents and the school district.
Parents bring concerns and comments and the board works on their behalf to remedy those. A good school board listens to the parents. I hear many stories from Durango School District 9-R parents that they are not being heard. They are unaware of what is being taught to their children, or worse, that children are being taught over-sexualized and over-politicized lessons.
If parents cannot visit classrooms, if the curriculum is not transparent and, in some cases, if children are not able to bring home material from their classwork, how can parents understand what is being taught and voice their needs? I’m concerned for those parents that are shut out from the very important decisions used to teach their children.
I’ve listened to all the current candidates; I’ve attended school board meetings. I feel the the existing 9-R school board is not listening to a large portion of parents, and not transparent with their curriculum.
I will be voting for a change in the 9-R district (Kristine Paslay, Richard “Dean” Hill and Donna Gulec) in an attempt to bring greater transparency and communication for parents, thereby bringing back an important purpose of the school board as liaison.
