Fort Lewis women fall to first-place Mines

Team heads into break 2-10

The Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team started strong against the RMAC-leading and No. 15 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Saturday, but Mines eventually pulled away to win 87-53.

The two teams were tied at 14-14 late in the first quarter as FLC knocked down a lot of open looks. Sydney Candelaria turned in one play for the highlight reels, somehow staying in bounds on a baseline move and scoring to give FLC a 6-4 lead. Alyssa Adams assisted Kelsey Sorenson with a nice pass down low.

Mines, however, dominated the second quarter 27-10 to take a big lead into halftime, 52-28. Jana Conejero and Adams knocked down 3-pointers, but Mines scored the last 11 points of the half.

The Skyhawks won the third quarter by a point, 15-14. Sorenson and Adams both hit treys, and Candelaria and Piper Terry added some two-pointers.

FLC then scored six of the first eight points in the fourth, but Mines finished the game strong to extend its lead and win the contest comfortably.

Candelaria scored 20 points to lead the Skyhawks. Sorenseon added 13 points and eight rebounds. Alyssa Adams chipped in six points.

Megan Van de Graaf scored 20 lead to lead the Orediggers.

With the loss, FLC slipped to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the RMAC. Mines improved to 10-1, 5-0.

Next up for the Skyhawks is a Jan. 4 contest against South Dakota Mines (0-11, 0-5) in Rapid City.
