Lady Wolverines blank Pagosa, 5-0

Rey scores twice; Fusco gets shutout

Wasting little time capitalizing upon freshman Sydney Rey’s ice-breaking 40th-minute goal seconds before halftime, the Bayfield Lady Wolverines netted their first two second-half shots and increased their advantage against visiting Pagosa Springs to 3-0 en route to a solid 5-0 victory Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Preslie Wagner, who’d assisted on Rey’s counterattack when senior Mattie Moore controlled and cleared a Lauren Monterroso corner kick, forwarding the ball to Wagner near midfield, then intercepted a PSHS clearance played across goalie Trista Tully's line, and beat the keeper's slide to put BHS up 2-0 in the 44th minute.

Senior Jamaica Garza then blasted a 47th-minute free kick from roughly 40 yards that, with help from a breeze, bounced over Tully’s gloves.

Rey then struck again through traffic in the 60th minute.

Freshman Tanna Owens converted in the 80th minute a rebound of a Rey shot that somehow managed to escape Tully’s grip.

Fortunate that Lady Pirate Nika Hinger smashed a 17th-minute shot off her far post, and even more fortunate her 63rd-minute overhead deflection of a Monterroso try went off the near post behind her and not into the vacated net, senior Annie Fusco earned the shutout – always a major bonus in 3A Southwestern League play – for Bayfield.

Up next, BHS (2-2, 1-1 3A SWL) will travel to Del Norte (0-5, 0-3 2A Southwestern) for an 11 a.m. kickoff Saturday. Pagosa Springs (1-2, 0-1 3A SWL), meanwhile, will host Leadville-based 2A Lake County at 11 a.m.
