Podium eludes Durango swimming at Southwestern League Championships

No Durango High School boys swimmers harboured aspirations of a team Southwestern League championship.

They probably thought some individual ones were possible, at least.

The Demons finished fourth as a team with 159 points.

The District 51 Gryphons won with 401.

Junior Tommy Pannell turned in Durango’s best performance in fourth in the 500-yard freestyle. He finished in 5 minutes, 29.39 seconds.

Pannell also was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.55.

Ben Miller finished fifth in diving with 238.45 points.

Pannathorn Jirasart took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:16.55.

The Demons’ 200-yard medley relay finished fifth in 1:58.61, and their 400-yard freestyle relay also took fifth.

Their last relay, the 200-yard freestyle, finished in sixth in 1:46.77.

Ben Clark took seventh in the 100 back in 1:03.81.

Iain McCourt took eighth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:12.43.

Jarasart was ninth in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.03 seconds, and Jason Clark took ninth in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.99.

The Demons will head to the state championships next weekend in Thornton.
