Wins for Wests

DHS doubles squads come through

A mix-and-match squad of Demons experienced a mixed bag of results Saturday.

The Durango High School girls tennis team fell 5-2 to Fruita Monument at home Saturday, but the Demons were encouraged by wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with pairings of players who hadn’t played together previously.

The West sisters, Chloe and Emily, completed a strong week. They won together against Glenwood Springs on Friday, and they both won on separate teams Saturday.

Chloe West and Hailee Pritchard paired to beat Sam Gardner and Madison Ketchem 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday. Emily West and Ruby DeCora teamed to take down Augusta McCain and Sofia Treider 1-6, 7-6 (9-7) and 11-9 in the tiebreaker in a thrilling come-from-behind victory.

“At doubles, it was anyone we could match together,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said as the Demons pieced together a lineup with players gone on spring break. “We scrambled, but those middle doubles teams were great. The West twins both got wins for their teams, and we’re thrilled to see that.”

Sophomore Maggie Hackett fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to Sarah Fleming. Hackett played up a spot with DHS’ No. 1 singles player on vacation.

Kit Hackett, Maggie’s older sister, lost 1-6, 6-4 and 14-12 in another tough tiebreaker, her second loss in a tiebreaker in two days. She’ll return to No. 3 singles after spring break after receiving great experience in tough matches over the weekend.

DHS junior Hannah Liberman lost 6-1, 6-2 to Tayvia Voytilla at No. 3 singles.

DHS dropped the No. 1 doubles match, as Skylar Barr and Jenni Snowberger couldn’t get past Alyssa Bohrer and Amy Espinoza in a 6-3, 6-2 match for Fruita Monument.

At No. 4 doubles, Jasmine Herrera and Braden Higby fell 6-1, 6-0 to Monica Burdett and Paige Hobson.

“There was good play all over the court,” Weisfeldt said.

DHS now will take a week off for spring break.
