The Ignacio football team had an early 8-6 lead against the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers on Friday.
But the Bobcats (0-4) couldn’t carry the lead into halftime, as the Panthers added a late score with 1 minute, 2 seconds to go in the first half to take a 12-8 advantage they wouldn’t surrender.
Cortez (1-3) went on to win the game 26-14 with a late touchdown to ice the game with 1:06 to play. It gave new head coach Scott Conklin his first win as the team’s head coach.
Ignacio’s first score came on a pass from Zach Weinreich to Lawrence Valdez.
The Bobcats played tough and trimmed to Cortez lead to 18-14 on a 3-yard touchdown run by Tyler Beebe with 9:15 to play, but Ignacio couldn’t get any closer.
Ignacio will open league play at 7 p.m. next Friday at home against John Mall (3-2).
Ignacio head coach Ponch Garcia could not be reached for comment at press time Friday.
