Something about traveling to the Front Range doesn’t agree with the Durango High School boys soccer team.
The Demons fell 1-0 to Mullen Friday night in a game played at Pueblo’s Dutch Clark Stadium. Mullen’s goal came 10 minutes into the game on a controversial penalty kick. It was the fourth penalty kick in the last two games the Demons (2-2) have allowed in games played on the Interstate 25 corridor.
“We dominated the game. Even the other coach said we outplayed them. They had one shot on goal during the course of play, and our keeper Trey (Furnas) made the save,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.
The way the penalty came about was what made it controversial, Parker said.
“It was a one-versus-one situation. They played a good through ball into the box, but then their kid tripped over the ball and went down,” Parker said. “The side judge called our defender for pushing. Even the kid told the ref he tripped on the ball, and even the Mullen coach said it wasn’t a penalty, but they gave him the PK.
“I don’t know what it is, but every time we come over the mountain, we give up penalties.”
Durango only let Mullen (2-2-1) across midfield six or seven times, Parker estimated. He also said his team took 15 shots and put 10 or 12 on frame.
The Demons will stay in Pueblo to face Pueblo Centennial at 10 a.m. Saturday.
