Wanting to build upon their high-energy home win over Ignacio less than 48 hours earlier, the Bayfield Wolverines were unable to do so Saturday night in a 55-42 loss at Pagosa Springs.
Senior Jackson Queen went off for three 3-pointers and piled up a team-high 19 points in defeat, but was the only BHS player reaching double figures.
Senior Lance Mazur finished with two treys and eight total points. Senior Caden Wood – who’d missed the Ignacio game because of illness – also logged eight points. Wood finished 6-of-7 from the free-throw line, helping Bayfield (6-6 overall, 1-3 3A/4A Intermountain) boast a quality 11-of-13 effort as a whole.
From the field, however, the Wolverines ended up shooting just 24.5% (13-of-53), including a 22.7 rate (5-of-22) from 3-point land.
Sophomore Lincoln Williams ended up with a 2-point, 5-rebound, 6-steal line. Wood, Queen and senior Noah Chamblee each grabbed four boards against the Pirates (10-2, 2-1), who entered the contest ranked No. 6 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A poll.
Bayfield will next host Alamosa – elevated to No. 6 in Monday’s 4A rankings while PSHS somehow slipped to No. 7 – on Friday, then travel to Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday.
Falling behind 19-6 after one quarter of play on Saturday, the Bayfield girls ended up getting 10 points from sophomore Renae Foutz in a 49-point road loss to Pagosa Springs. Senior Abria Thayer netted BHS’ other four points as the Pirates’ advantage grew to 36-10 at halftime and 57-14 through three quarters.
PSHS senior Chantelle Caldwell totaled 17 points to pace all players, and sophomore Elizabeth Currier was close behind with 15. Sophomore Karsyn Shahan cashed three 3-pointers and ended up with nine points, while juniors Annie O’Donnell and DaveyAnn Snarr each contributed eight to the victors’ cause.
Pagosa Springs improved to 2-10 overall, 2-1 IML; the Wolverines dropped to 2-8, 0-4 and will next welcome AHS – now No. 8 in the 4A girls’ poll – into BHS Gymnasium on Friday.
