Durango High School boys swimming season ends at CHSAA state meet

The Durango Demons knew what they were up against before the state championship meet even began.

Durango High School’s boys swimming team loaded the bus for Thornton eager to gain experience at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A boys swimming state championships. On that front, the trip was a success, but no DHS swimmer advanced past the first round of preliminaries Friday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center.

“This year seemed like an extra fast year,” DHS head coach Tom Joyner said of the competition. “We just didn’t have it. We all swam well, hit our marks and some guys improved on their times, but we weren’t that much better to get into the consolation or finals heats.”

Joyner said it wasn’t predicted that any of his athletes would reach the finals, and he was glad several boys got their first taste of the state meet.

“It wasn’t in the cards for us this year, but overall it was a successful season,” Joyner said.
