Man wins NFL prize for blood donations

Jerry Zink is the winner of an NFL package from United Blood Services.

He was chosen from more than 12,000 people who donated blood in the region in August and September.

Zink has donated more than 95 pints of blood since 1990. That is more than 11 gallons of blood. His donations have helped save more than 285 people because 1 pint of blood can save up to three lives.

Zink has the universal blood type O negative, so he donates blood as often as possible, as many as five or six times a year.

The NFL package includes two tickets to the Green Bay Packers versus Denver Broncos game in Denver and a hotel stay. Zink will pass the prize on to one of his employees.

Mercy ranks among best for orthopedic, spine surgery

Mercy Regional Medical Center has been recognized by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 best hospitals for orthopedic surgery and spine surgery in 2016.

Mercy is the only hospital in Colorado to rank among America’s 100 best for four consecutive years.

Healthgrades, an online resource that helps consumers make informed decisions about health care, evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions and identified the 100 best-performing hospitals across all conditions or procedures.

A five-star rating indicates that Mercy’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or conducting the procedure being evaluated.

Healthgrades also recognized Mercy with several other awards, including hip fracture treatment, pulmonary services and treatment of heart failure.
