The Bayfield High School baseball team shut out Centauri twice on Saturday at BHS to begin its 3A/2A Intermountain League season strong.

The Wolverines only needed four innings to win Game 1 of the doubleheader, 15-0. BHS followed it up with an 8-0 win in Game 2 to improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the IML. Centauri slipped to 6-3, 0-2.

In Game 1, the Wolverines got more runs than Centauri had outs in the contest, plating their 15th run with only one out in the fourth. Bayfield scored seven runs in the first inning, added two in the third and then enacted the mercy rule with six in the fourth.

Nic Twedt went 2-3 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored to lead Bayfield’s offense. Tavian Box drove in three runs and scored twice. Andy Monger hit a double, drove in two and scored once. Cole Wagner drove in two and scored one. Lance Mazur, who was the winning pitcher, tripled at the plate, scored once and drove in one.

On the mound, Mazur didn’t give up a hit in two innings of work, striking out four while walking one to earn the win.

In Game 2, Bayfield jumped out to an early lead again and then kept adding on to it.

The Wolverines led 3-0 after one inning, 4-0 after two, 7-0 after three and 8-0 after five.

Noah Chamblee smacked a home run and a triple for Bayfield, driving in three and scoring twice. Jackson Queen had two RBIs, including a sacrifice fly. Donovan Candelaria drove in one and scored one while Twedt also scored once for BHS.

Queen threw all seven innings to get a complete-game victory for BHS. Queen only gave up one hit and one walk while striking out 14 Falcons in the game.

Bayfield will continue league play on Saturday when it hosts a doubleheader against Alamosa (9-3, 2-0). The teams are currently tied for first in the league with identical records. They will square off at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at BHS.
