‘It was never close’

Aspen routs DHS boys lacrosse
Kyle Robinette scored one of two goals for the Durango High School lacrosse team Saturday against No. 2 Aspen. It was the first time the Demons had played on a full field all year because of the snow.

Very little went right for the Durango High School boys lacrosse team in its season opener.

The Demons lost 23-2 at No. 2 Aspen, playing on a grass field for the first time all season. They had been practicing in the DHS gym with the recent snowstorm.

“That was our first time out on a full field all season,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “We’ve been practicing with 45 guys on a basketball court because of our lack of facilities.”

The Skiers cruised to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.

Enver Djunushbekov scoared a goal and dished out an assist for DHS. Kyle Robinette scored the other goal, with Colin Barkely picking up an assist.

It was Hank Muir’s first-ever game between the pipes after playing defense the last few seasons. He made 17 saves replacing all-conference graduate Walker Brown.

“We were happy with his performance,” coach Robinette said. “He’s only going to keep getting better.”

Harry Ferguson, Tyler Tick and Jonathan Wells all scored five goals for Aspen (2-0), while Ryan Fitzgerald netted four for the Skiers.

The Demons will return home for their next game, an 11 a.m. Saturday date with Fruita Monument for which they hope to practice outside.

“We’re going to learn from (the loss). we’re going to watch film and see where we can improve. We need to improve in all aspects of the game,” Robinette said. “I’m just looking forward to the day when we can actually get outside where we can spread out and get some proper preparation going.”
