Thyroid assessment will be offered Friday
The thyroid gland is known as the master gland of metabolism because it controls our ability to make energy.
Poor thyroid function can cause fatigue, depression, weight gain, digestive problems and many other health issues.
Dr. Nancy Utter will offer a free consultation about thyroid functioning Friday at Durango Natural Medicine, 117 County Road 250.

Senior center to offer tai chi
Tai chi, an ancient Chinese martial art for self-defense, is used today as a graceful form of exercise.
Tai chi promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements and can help improve balance and mitigate the health effects of diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis and arthritis.
Classes are available to people 60 and older. The beginner class meets at 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center, 2424 Main Ave. An intermediate class meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays at the center.
Classes are $3 each or $20 for the month of February. The first class is free.

Health coalition to present award
The Community Health Action Coalition (formerly called the Citizens Health Advisory Council) will meet from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
The public is welcome. The coalition will award its Health Hero Award, which is given annually to a community volunteer demonstrating exceptional performance in helping create better health-care access, higher-quality services and healthier communities.

Nominations sought for Star Awards
The Star Awards will be presented at the Nightingale Luminary Awards Banquet at 5 p.m. March 12 at Fort Lewis College’s Community Concert Hall.
People can nominate a novice nurse for the Rising Star Award or an expert nurse for the Shining Star Award.
The nomination deadline is Feb. 16.

Low-vision technology available for seniors
The Southwest Center for Independence and the San Juan Basin Area Agency on Aging have joined to serve people age 60 and older who are experiencing age-related vision loss, such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
For people who qualify, the program can purchase as much as $500 of assistive technology such as computers, special lights and magnifiers. Eligible participants must live in Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma or San Juan counties.

Heart Safe La Plata to offer CPR class
Heart Safe La Plata, a local nonprofit organization, will offer a CPR Pro class from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday.
The class will be held at Durango Fire Protection Station 1, 142 Sheppard Drive in Bodo Industrial Park behind Morehart Murphy Auto Center.
