July 12, 4:30-6 p.m.: Great Garden Series – Bonsai in the Southern Rockies. Bonsai, the art and horticultural practice of joining a plant and a confined container, is not limited to a single species of tree or even tree species typically seen in examples from Japan. In fact, bonsai in Colorado has a long history dating back to the unfortunate period of Japanese internment camps in the state. In this talk, we will explore the use of native tree and shrub species as Bonsai subjects.

A kindness-themed Summer Learning Program that runs in June and July featuring live animal visits, weekly programs for all ages and two outdoor movies. There will be storytimes for the youngest participants, twice weekly STEAM programs for kids and weekly activities for teens. Adult events include a beginning fly fishing class, kitten yoga, pottery fairy house making and more. And there will be prizes. Participants will get an entry to the weekly drawings for every activity they complete, including attending a program, committing an act of kindness, completing the StoryWalk and reading a book.

Thursdays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Bumble Bees Story Buzz. Storytime and craft, then stay after to play and meet other families. All ages welcome. This program will be held in the library park, weather permitting.
For elementary ages
Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m.-noon: Busy Bees Adventure Hour. Kids, families and caregivers, participate in special activities, like tie-dying, animal visits, honey tasting and a rock swap. Open to all, but younger children will need assistance with the projects. This is a drop-in event and participants may come and go as they please, no registration required. This program will be held in the library park or garden, weather permitting.

Saturday, July 8, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.: Model Train Open House. The Silver San Juan Division of National Model Railroad Association will host a Model Train Open House. The group will have an HO Scale railroad set up all day in the Community Room. You can even learn how to operate trains. All ages are invited.
Friday, July 14, 11 a.m.-noon: Say Hello to a Horse. July 15 is National I Love Horses Day. Hang out with a horse and learn more about these impressive animals.

Friday, July 28, 11 a.m.-noon: LPC Humane Society Adoption Event. Meet some of La Plata County Humane Society's adoptable pets looking for their fur-ever homes. Learn about humane education and being an attentive pet parent from the LPCHS team members. When you adopt, you are not only finding a new family member, but you are giving an animal a second chance at a new life.
Friday, July 28, Sunset: Outdoor Movie “Puss in Boots The Last Wish.” A free outdoor showing of the 2022 DreamWorks movie “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” The movie will start around sunset. Bring your own blanket or chair and enjoy a night at the movies under the stars.
Sunday, July 30, 1:30-2:30 p.m.: Summer Learning Final Foam Party. Let’s end this year’s program with a giant family foam party to finish off the summer’s fun. We will be transforming the library park into a dance floor with several feet of foam.
Mondays and Wednesdays, 9-10 a.m.: Yoga for all. Combines the cool stillness of yin yoga and heat and flow of movement to create a balance that can be modified to work for every body. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged. These classes are on a donation basis. Mountain Top Movement Fitness Classes

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-8:50 a.m. Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all of the body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but always different moves. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels.
Sundays, 2-4 p.m.: Community Knitting and Crochet Group. All are welcome. Whether you have been knitting and/or crocheting for years or you would like to learn, we will do our best to help you get started.
Thursdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Open Art Studio. All mediums. All ages. Work on your projects in a group setting.
July 3, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writers’ Group. No rules, just writing. Each month, a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

July 6, 4-6 p.m.: County Commissioner Office Hours. Matt Salka will hold in-person office hours. Members of the public are invited to meet with Salka to discuss county issues of interest or concern. For more information, call 382-6219.
July 6, 6-7:30 p.m.: Postpartum Care. Postpartum and birth doula Leah Ryder is hosting a free “Postpartum Prep” course. During this class, we will discuss significant points in postpartum planning such as breastfeeding, sleep, supplies, postpartum depression and more. You will also gain access to a list of local resources and professional support. Bring yourself and your support system whoever that may be.
July 11 and 25, 6-8 p.m.: Intro to Jamming. One of the joys of learning a musical instrument is eventually playing with other people. Whether it’s with your friends who also play, or with people you’ve never met, how do you get started? You know a few songs, you’ve practiced them for hours, and most of the time, you can nail them when you’re by yourself. But playing in public – that’s a whole different thing. If this describes your situation, then this workshop is for you. In this free, interactive two-session workshop, you’ll learn how a jam session works, how to prepare for one and some simple session etiquette. Session one will be an introduction to what goes on at a jam session and some actual jamming. Then, during session two, we’ll jam on tunes we handed out at the first session. The workshop will be led by Glen Tinnin and John Scammon, both lifelong musicians who have attended and led countless jam sessions. This event is co-sponsored by Pine River Arts. Hummingbird Feeder Craft Class: Friday, July 14 at 2 p.m.: Use recycled wine bottles to make feeders for hummingbirds that you can decorate and paint. This is a free class, but sign up in advance by calling us at 563-9287.
Summer Music Series: Friday July 14 at 5:30 p.m.: Free live music at the library. Our second guest of the summer is the Rock’n Horse Band. A fun ’60s and ’70s cover band. Food trucks and vendors will be on hand, along with the Friends of the Library selling books and chocolate.
