When I was the Special Sections editor at The Durango Herald from 2008-2010, I was driving into town from home near Purgatory. I happened upon the Snowdown Balloon Race launch as the train stopped to let passengers out to shoot photos.
I jumped out of my car and shot some photos of my own. It was -5 degrees that morning and you could see it in the locomotive’s steam and smoke. Here is one of those photos from 2010.
