Photo: Downtown Gathering – Ca. 1890

This old photo documents some kind of gathering downtown at the Durango Livery. What brought this group together is apparently lost to history, but it does not appear to be “business as usual.” A horse auction would make sense. In any case, everyone has turned to the camera so whatever the event, someone thought to officially capture the moment for posterity. The Durango Livery was located on the east side of Main Avenue between 11th and 12th streets. The building has been expanded over the years and now houses the restaurant Taco Libre. The store attached with the sign “Tin Shop & Second Hand Store” was the old Model Tire Store, now Catacombs Fitness. If one looks closely, above the livery building on the right side, the Amy Mansion is visible. Today, it is Hood Mortuary.

Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org
