I read with interest “Good neighbors: REI Durango seeks to become a trusted community partner, let’s give it a chance to do so,” (Herald, July 27) pertaining to the opening of the new REI store. Why bother? It was the same old Herald passive-aggressive playbook when Herald staff wishes for a different outcome.
Recalling the Herald has been on the opposite and losing side of more significant community issues that sometimes it’s hard to keep score. Remember Walmart? How’d that workout? One only has to observe the parking lot on any given day. Score: Walmart 1, Durango Herald 0. Animas-La Plata another clear defeat given the clear win-win upon completion of the project after decades of Herald opposition.
Home Depot yet another Herald defeat. Ad nauseam were the voices of opposition and the hand-wringing over the fate of locals’ favorite Kroegers. Today Kroegers flourishes as a shining example of how well-managed local stores can compete successfully with national retail chain stores.
