Hope Scheppelman has decided that Jeff Hurd doesn’t demonstrate a profound enough disdain for the people of District 3 and has set herself in the running to replace him. Of course this is disingenuous (Herald, Jun. 11).
Mr. Hurd has consistently voted against the interests of the people of the district not least in increasing our share in the GOP’s 3 trillion U.S. debt increase, thousands losing health care, thousands of children losing nutrition assistance, hundreds of small businesses, farmers and ranchers losing the workers they need. Mr. Hurd is also obediently silent about Trump’s intimate ties to Jeffrey Epstein. He is quite sufficiently MAGA.
What Ms. Scheppelman’s run does is open the door to the district being heavily propagandized by the Dave Williams, MAGA wing of the Colorado GOP. It floods in dark money from anonymous billionaires who, laundered through Advance Colorado, spend more on propagandizing each voter than most of us make in a month. In 2022 alone, these anonymous billionaires spent almost $12 million to scare the socks off honest Coloradans.
Most Coloradans are proud to own our politics. Independent, Republican, or Democrat, we stand up for what we believe in; we don’t hide in the shadows and pay off others to be our lackeys to achieve political goals that harm our neighbors and further enrich the already obscenely wealthy.
When the flyers and the ads scream at you and tell you to be afraid, ask yourself: Why and by whom is that money being spent? It’s certainly not for your benefit.
