Two hospitalized after shooting at Durango Walmart

Police: No active threat to public

Two people were taken to Mercy Hospital with gunshot wounds Thursday after a shooting at the Walmart in Durango.

One of the individuals hospitalized was the shooter, said Amanda Garrison, spokeswoman for the Durango Police Department.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting, including how the suspect was wounded.

“The situation is contained and there are no ongoing threats to the public,” Garrison said.

Shots were reported about 4:30 p.m., prompting a response by the Durango Police Department, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and Durango Fire Protection District, Garrison said.

Law enforcement and emergency responders remained on scene as of 5 p.m.

“We ask the public to avoid the area so first responders can work safely,” the Durango Police Department said in a news release. “Additional, confirmed details will be released as soon as they are available.”
