I am writing in support of Ballot Issue 1A. Our county is facing a serious shortfall in revenues, and it’s time we take a responsible step forward to sustain the services our community depends on.
For decades, La Plata County relied on oil and gas revenues to fund essential services – roads, public safety, and community programs. But those revenues are steadily disappearing as production declines. Meanwhile, costs continue to rise, and the demands on our infrastructure and public safety have grown.
Ballot Issue 1A proposes a modest one-cent sales tax – just one penny on the dollar – to ensure we can maintain and improve services residents and visitors alike depend on. It’s been more than 40 years since the county last raised its sales tax. That’s four decades of inflation, population growth, and expanding responsibilities without a single increase in our primary local revenue source.
Voting “Yes” on 1A means safer roads, stronger public safety, and reliable county services for everyone. It’s a small investment that will have a lasting impact on the quality of life in La Plata County.
Let’s protect the place we all call home and ensure our county can continue to serve its people well into the future. Please join me in voting “Yes” on 1A.
