As snow falls on Camino Del Rio, it’s a sign that winter is here, and the sports schedule for the upcoming week reflects that.
High school winter sports really kick into high gear over the next week, with all basketball teams beginning their seasons. Durango hockey keeps its season going with its home opener, and Bayfield High School hosts the Wolverine Classic Wrestling Tournament to kick off the wrestling season.
Fort Lewis College’s basketball teams continue their road trips this weekend and open up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The indoor track teams also begin their seasons.
Here’s the local sports schedule for the upcoming week:
Thursday: Women’s basketball at MSU Denver at 5:30 p.m.
Notes: The Skyhawks are off to their best start in eight years, even after suffering their first loss of the season in Grand Junction to Simon Fraser University, 74-67, on Saturday. FLC dropped to 5-1 overall after it shot 8% from 3-point range in the loss to the Red Leafs.
MSU Denver has had a tough start to its season at 1-5 overall; the Roadrunners have faced three teams that have at least received votes in the Division II top 25.
Last season, FLC beat MSU Denver twice. If FLC can beat MSU Denver on Thursday in both teams’ RMAC opener, the Skyhawks will have more wins over Division II opponents than they did all of last season.
Men’s basketball at MSU Denver at 7:30 p.m.
Notes: The Skyhawks men’s basketball team is in a much tougher spot than the women for their RMAC opener. FLC is 2-4 overall and is on a four-game losing streak for the first time in head coach Jordan Mast’s tenure and for the first time since the 2020-2021 season.
FLC’s last loss was to No. 15 West Texas A&M, 105-84. The Skyhawks allowed the Buffaloes to make 18 3-pointers; FLC has allowed an average of 93 points per game in its losing streak.
MSU Denver has had a tough start to the season at 1-5 overall, and the Roadrunners are also on a four-game losing streak heading into their RMAC opener against FLC.
Last season, it was a split series with MSU Denver winning in Durango and FLC winning in Denver.
