High-flying Firebirds wow Wolverines, 78-46

Play with fire? Get burned.

Play against the Firebirds? Similar consequence.

At least that’s how it’s gone so far in the young 2025-26 basketball season for Windsor Charter Academy boys basketball’s opponents – including Bayfield, which traveled to the northern Front Range and, on Saturday, suffered a 78-46 defeat.

Sharp-shooting juniors Hayes Malone and Drew Jepson each sank two 3-pointers for BHS (2-2 overall), but managed nothing more offensively. Sophomore guard Harrison Williams (12 points) was the only Wolverine to crack double figures.

Six of ten from the free-throw line, and with two treys also to his name, junior guard Dayton Long racked up a game-high 26 points for WCA (5-0 overall). Senior guard Andrew Schams netted nine points during the fourth quarter and totaled 22, while junior guard Gavin Renniessen knocked down two triples and finished with nine points.

Trailing 18-6 after the first quarter, Bayfield more or less kept pace during the second and went into halftime down 32-21. But with sufficient depth and motivation to protect its home court, Windsor Charter Academy won the third quarter 21-11 and then piled on another 25 points – giving the ’Birds at least 73 in each of their outings to date – during the closing eight minutes.

The Wolverines will next see action at Aztec’s three-day 2025 Rumble in ‘The Jungle,’ and begin the event at 1:30 p.m. Thursday against defending NMAA Class 3A State Champion Robertson. Located in Las Vegas, New Mexico, the Cardinals – who went 28-4 overall last winter – will enter AHS’ Lillywhite Gymnasium standing 1-4 overall after falling 83-58 on Saturday to Taos (6-1 overall).
