No. 20 Glenwood Springs upsets No. 4 Durango in second round

Upsets continue to fill 4A playoff bracket

For the second consecutive playoff game, Durango went behind early on its home field. This time, Durango High School wasn’t able to come back.

No. 20 Glenwood Springs (12-4-1) got a goal in the 14th minute from sophomore forward Justin Garces, as he got his head on a pass sent in from junior defender Aidan Partch. Garces’ shot went into the bottom left corner of the goal past Durango goalkeeper Levi Larson.

Durango (14-2-1) put up a valiant fight in the match but could never find an equalizing goal, as many shots went a little wide or just over the crossbar.

It was the second consecutive upset win on the road for Glenwood, which beat No. 13 Discovery Canyon 1-0 in the first round. Also in the bracket, no. 28 Kennedy pulled off a second consecutive upset with a 2-1 win at No. 21 Thomas Jefferson. Kennedy had beat No. 5 Battle Mountain in the first round. Now, Kennedy and Glenwood Springs will meet in the CHSAA Class 4A quarterfinals on Saturday in Glenwood Springs.
