Animas High School announces summer schedule
The main office and office of the registrar at Animas High School will remain open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday.
The school’s summer switchboard at (970) 247-2474 will handle all inquires and messages beginning Monday.
The AHS administration and executive team will be available year-round. Head of School Jake Lauer will be available for meetings through June 14. The school is working to establish executive office space for the summer while it moves out of the strip mall and transitions to its new location at Twin Buttes. The 3206 Main Ave. location will officially close June 28.

Child care center announces openings
Durango Adult Education Center announces that its Common’s Childcare Center will have full-time openings for infants and toddlers, ages 2 months to 36 months, beginning mid-August for the 2013-14 school year.
The center is fully licensed by the state of Colorado and staffed by qualified child care professionals. The center will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday in the Commons Building next to Albertsons.
The cost is $768 per month for infants and $732 per month for toddlers.

Social work licensure course scheduled for July
A Social Work Licensure Preparation Course will be offered in Durango.
This course will prepare social workers for the Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Advanced Generalist examinations.
The program costs $275 and includes flash cards, study guide, cram session and dinner Friday night and Saturday snacks.
Dr. Nancy Lucero, LCSW, will teach the course, which will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 12 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 13 at the Commons Building, Room 219, 701 Camino del Rio.

Rotary club announces scholarship winners
The Rotary Club of Durango presented two local students with college scholarships for the next academic year.
Ian Junkerman of Durango and David Storey of Ignacio each received a $1,000 award based on their demonstrated community service, leadership, strong moral character and academic achievement.
Junkerman, a 2011 graduate of Durango High School, will enter his sophomore year at Colorado State University majoring in civil engineering and has recently been inducted into the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Storey, a 2012 honor roll graduate of Ignacio High School, will attend Fort Lewis College.
Alpine Bank and Bank of Colorado each contributed $500 to make these scholarships possible.

Timberline Academy holds commencement exercises
Colorado Timberline Academy, a private high school north of Durango, held its 38th commencement exercises in an outdoor ceremony June 2.
Diplomas were presented to these graduates: Sara Calvin, Midland, Mich.; Robert Gray, Las Vegas, Nev.; Devrett Gupta, Portland, Ore.; Bennett Hoffman, Cortland, N.Y.; Kristin Kohl, Colorado Springs; Andrew Nilles, Arvada; and Gracie Timmerman, Phoenix.
The faculty selected Timmerman to receive the Academic Excellence Award for outstanding academic work during his year at the academy. Nilles and Timmerman received the Cooper Larsh Scholarship award.
Julia Love initiated into honor society
Julia Love of Pagosa Springs was initiated into Northeastern State University’s Rho Theta Sigma.
The university is in Tahlequah, Okla. The honor society is designed to honor students with high achievements in all disciplines. These initiates – undergraduate and graduate, from multiple majors and diverse collegiate backgrounds – have met the requirements of a 3.4 grade-point average for two full-time semesters or a 3.6 GPA for one full-time semester. Initiates are dedicated to lifetime membership and committed to the organization’s principles and codes.

Ignacio Junior High School students receive medals
Ignacio Junior High School seventh-graders Raeann Martinez and Chloe Velasquez and eighth-grader Chloe Knapp received medals at the Colorado School of Mines on May 18 for scoring in the top 25 percent of Gifted and Talented students from seven states for their scores on the ACT science test.
In addition, their Gifted and Talented and ACT teacher, Mary Lynne Herr, was one of two Colorado teachers awarded “in honor of tremendous work done to assist students and families in participating in the Western Academic Talent Search” and for having a high number of students participating based on the size of the school.
Blake Knoll earns engineering degree
Blake A. Knoll, son of Blake and Gina Knoll, received his Master of Science degree in nuclear engineering from Colorado School of Mines on May 10.
Knoll received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering physics from Mines in 2012. He is a 2008 graduate of Ignacio High School.
Elizabeth Bush graduates from CSU
Elizabeth Ashley Bush, daughter of Meg and Greg Bush of Durango, graduated from Colorado State University on May 17 with a Bachelor of Science degree in human development and family studies.
Bush was born and raised in Durango, attended St. Columba Catholic School and graduated from Durango High School in 2010. She will live and work in Denver.
Durango district announces hires to leadership team
Durango School District 9-R announces these new hires to its leadership team: Jason Austin is the new executive director of finance and Lynn Mathers is the new executive director of curriculum and instruction.
Austin comes from Wisconsin where he served as the administrator of business services for Holmen School District in Holmen, Wis. Austin has six years of experience in school finance and five years of leadership experience in the private sector in business management and finance. He will oversee all aspects of the finance department for the Durango School District.
Mathers has been appointed as the new executive director of curriculum and instruction with a secondary focus. Mathers comes from the Falcon School District, where she served as a coordinator of curriculum, instruction and assessment since 2009. She has previously served in the same capacity in other districts and is certified in math and science. Mathers has 17 years of experience in curriculum and assessment.
She will facilitate the identification of what is a guaranteed and viable curriculum for students through curriculum maps for teachers. She also will oversee professional learning for teachers as well as identify resources for them.
Melissa Merryman earns accountancy degree
Melissa Christine Merryman of Durango graduated from the University of San Diego on May 26.
Merryman earned a bachelor’s degree in accountancy.
Megan Lane receives summa cum laude honor
Megan Lane of Durango was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing summa cum laude degree during Creighton University’s commencement ceremony on May 18.

Karen MacArthur joins Phi Kappa Phi
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi announces that Karen MacArthur of Durango was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. MacArthur was initiated at New Mexico Highlands University.
Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees also may qualify, as do faculty, professional staff members and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
