Durango High School three-sport athlete Lawrence Mayberry received a great deal of recognition in his four years competing for the Demons, and one more honor, possibly the last, came Thursday.
The Colorado High School Activities Association announced its All-State baseball teams, and the Demons’ senior captain received an honorable mention in Class 4A. Mayberry was also a CHSAA 4A first-team All-State selection as a running back on the best Durango High School football team in years, and he gave the basketball team quality minutes off the bench at the point guard position.
Mayberry, who played shortstop and pitcher, led the Demons with a .476 batting average, and his 30 hits were tops for Durango’s offense. He also led the team in doubles (7), triples (3), slugging (.682) and runs scored (27). In 68 at-bats, he struck out only six times.
On the mound, Mayberry led the Demons with two saves and finished the season with a team-best 2.67 earned-run average. He also was second on the team in appearances with eight, and his record was 1-1.
Durango had an up-and-down year but managed to squeak its way into the playoffs before losing to Delta in the opening round. Mayberry is one of five seniors on the baseball team to move on after the season, and one of many talented DHS seniors who will be missed by their teams next year.
Lewis-Palmer’s Paul Tillotson was awarded the Class 4A Player of the Year, and Valor Christian head coach Keith Wahl earned CHSAA’s 4A Coach of the Year.
As a senior, Tillotson hit for a .562 average with 40 RBIs and 19 runs. He amassed four home runs, two triples and 13 doubles. As a pitcher, he finished with an 8-1 record with a 1.02 ERA in 10 appearances. He threw five complete games.
Wahl, who resigned earlier this week to take an athletic director job at Briarwood Christian in Birmgingham, Alabama, led the Eagles to the state championship this season.
