Adult role model winners announced
The Adult Role Model Award contest, sponsored by Celebrating Healthy Communities of San Juan Basin Health Department, asked youths to nominate positive adult role models in La Plata County, and the winners of the second annual awards are:
Bayfield: Denise Hess, leader of Hope for Dylan Redwine.
Durango: Becca Katz, Spanish teacher at Animas High School.
Ignacio: Oscar Cosio, physical education teacher at Ignacio Intermediate School.
Latino: Maria Gonzales, Spanish teacher and Prejudice Elimination Action Team sponsor at Durango High School.
Native American: Julie Jacobson, mentor at Fort Lewis College.
All winners and nominees will be recognized with an asset champion proclamation at these locations:
Durango City Council at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Ignacio Town Board at 7 p.m. May 14.
Bayfield Town Board at 7 p.m. May 21.

Teens encouraged to participate in quiz
Teens are asked to visit StayTeen.org this month to participate in the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Quiz, which challenges them to think about what they might do in the moment through a series of scenarios.
The purpose is to focus the attention of teens on the importance of avoiding too-early pregnancy and parenthood. San Juan Basin Health Department provides teens with confidential birth control services and health education/counseling.

Resolving allergies to be discussed
Advanced Allergy Relief Center of the Southwest will present Resolving Airborne Allergies and Allergic Asthma at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Program Room 2 of Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Caleb Gates, licensed acupuncturist, will discuss how to resolve allergy symptoms using Advanced Allergy Therapeutics, needle-free treatments that change reactions to allergens.

Community clinic seeks volunteer dentists
La Plata Community Clinic, 1800 East Third Ave, Suite 103, needs dentists to volunteer (retired or in private practice). The clinic has a wait list for dental services. Dental assistants also are needed.
The clinic provides medical and dental services to the underserved population in La Plata County.
