The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce wants to see a motel built in Bayfield.
On Thursday, the chamber will host a meeting to discuss that effort with chamber members and other interested folks in the community.
Ideally, the chamber wants to create a task force to work on the recruitment effort.
"A motel provides lodging taxes and encourages travelers to stay a night or more, buy gas and eat at local restaurants," said Anne Cook, vice-president of the chamber.
Chamber board members think a 30-room or 40-room motel could operate near capacity for several events a year, including the Fourth of July, Heritage Days, BHS graduation, and high school games, including regional track meets and other events.
The closest lodging in the area is Sky Ute Casino. Other than that, people have to travel to Vallecito, Durango or Pagosa Springs.
The chamber is working with Region 9 Economic Development, the Town of Bayfield, and the La Plata Economic Development Alliance on the effort.
The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Bayfield Town Hall and will be hosted by the Pine River Times and Ballantine Communications, Inc. The public is welcome to attend.
