Conservation grants available to farmers, ranchers

The Center for Rural Affairs urges farmers and ranchers who want to participate in the Conservation Stewardship Program to act quickly.

Feb. 27 is the deadline to enroll. Interested parties should contact the Natural Resource Conservation Service in Durango. The telephone is number is 259-3289.

The stewardship program pays agricultural producers to foster clean water, improved soil management, development of wildlife habitat and protection of wetlands.

Participant’s can qualify for five-year conservation contracts that pay up to $40,000 annually.

As part of enrollment, applicants work with the local Natural Resource Conservation Service to determine their current conservation practices and what new projects they want to accomplish.

Sterling Moss, director of the NRCS office in Durango, said a couple of La Plata County agriculturalists are in the program.
