Fresh off two big home victories, the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team hopes to continue its hot streak through four upcoming road games.
Winners of four consecutive games and six of their last seven games, FLC (13-7, 10-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) sits in third place in the RMAC behind Colorado Mesa (21-0, 17-0 RMAC) and CSU-Pueblo (16-6, 13-3 RMAC). The Skyhawks have a chance to make up for a 78-73 home loss to CSU-Pueblo this Friday with a big game in Pueblo.
“It is going to be a big swing for us and a big swing in the conference these next few weeks,” FLC head coach Jason Flores said Saturday of his team’s upcoming four-game road trip. “We have put ourselves in a position to be able to do some things, and that is all we can ask for right now.”
Led by senior guards Ashley Kuchar and Erika Richards and senior forward Christie Groh, FLC boasts a potent offense that scored 108 points Saturday night against New Mexico Highlands. Kuchar and Richards rank No. 2 and No. 3 in points per game in the RMAC, and Groh also is in the top-five.
“This season is coming to an end, so we have to come together,” Kuchar said after she set a career-high with 28 points Saturday. “We have had a lot of games where we have been up and down, back and forth on what kind of team we are going to be.”
The RMAC Shootout will start March 4.
“Hopefully, these two games can really propel us forward and we can carry it out through the rest of the year,” Kuchar said after the team’s two wins against Western New Mexico and Highlands.
After this Friday’s game against CSU-Pueblo, FLC will remain on the road to face UC-Colorado Springs, Metro State and Regis. FLC has beaten all three of those teams at home this season.
“We have two tough weeks on the road against good teams. A lot of good teams are playing each other across the board,” Flores said. “I’m excited because I think – I don’t think, I know – we can play with anybody if we play well. All of the games are going to be tough, and that is what great competition is all about.”
