Wolverines work hard in N.M.

The Bayfield Wolverines worked hard for some positive results Saturday in Farmington, N.M.

Bayfield’s boys track and field team placed fourth with 40.5 team points, while the girls took fifth with 32 points at the Piedra Vista Invitational. Piedra Vista won the girls competition with 107 points, and Farmington won the boys side with 125 points.

“The results weren’t as good, but we were going against a really stiff wind that brought times back,” BHS head coach Sherry Kimball said. “We did have several really good performances.”

John Arnold was the boys pole vault champion with a jump of 12 feet, 6 inches. Michael Voss was third in the event at 12-00.

“They had a really stiff wind at their backs for pole vault. It was scary watching them,” Kimball said. “John really stepped up and performed well. He was confident and looked very good.”

Aubry Brown was first in the discus with a throw of 133-00. He also placed fifth in shot put at 39-11. Blane Barns was fourth in the discus with a throw of 106-04.

Conner Kennedy took second in the high jump at 5-08 and fifth in the long jump with a leap of 19-04.75.

“Conner tied a personal best in the long jump and had a standout day,” Kimball said.

Trevor Gabbard placed third in the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 13.71 seconds. He also took fourth in the 1,600-meter run at 4:48.84.

Bayfield’s 4x200-meter boys relay team of Preston Hardy, Gabe Kaufmann, Kennedy, and Zach Phelps placed fourth in 1:40.36.

Jessica Cusick helped lead the Bayfield girls team with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.19. She joined Morgan Allred, Brittany Hunter and Jessie Roukema to win the 1,600-meter sprint medley in 4:55.10.

“Cusick had a really nice day winning the 400 and then anchoring the 1,600 medley team that won,” Kimball said.

It was a good day for the Bayfield girls relay teams even though the sprint relay teams were missing a few of their normal runners. The 4x200 team of Trista Holley, Amy Roach, Roukema and Ashlyn Schulder was fourth in 2:02.70. The 4x100 team of Allred, Hooley, Roach and Roukema took sixth in 55.34 seconds.

Roukema placed fourth in the high jump at 4-10. Amber Johnson was third in that event, also at 4-10.

“Roukema is one of those really top-notch athletes who will do some good things this year for sure,” Kimball said.

Allred finished sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 7-03.

Brittany Hunter claimed fifth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:10.32.

Ignacio High School

Ignacio also participated in the meet, taking 12th out of 12 teams in both the boys and girls meets.

Mike Perez was the only placer for the IHS boys. He took fifth in the 400-meter dash in 55.55 seconds.

Annika Zschiegner scored the only points for the IHS girls with a sixth-place finish in the high jump when she cleared 4-06.

Both BHS and IHS will head back to New Mexico next Saturday for the Aztec Icebreaker Invitational at Fred Cook Memorial Stadium in Aztec.

“It will be the first state qualifier for us this year. Aztec and Bayfield kind of combine to put this event on as a qualifier for both New Mexico and Colorado,” Kimball said. “We are looking forward to the opportunity to post some times and get a good start to qualifying.”
