Open Shutter to open Roman Loranc exhibit
The Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave., will exhibit handcrafted black-and-white darkroom photographs by California photographer Roman Loranc from Oct. 16 to Dec. 2.
The show, titled “Secretive Beauty,” will host a collection of photographs spanning the greater portion of Loranc’s photographic career. An artist’s reception will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16.

Documentary to be shown Thursday
The award-winning documentary, “Alive Inside,” will be shown at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sunflower Theatre, 8 E. Main St., Cortez.
The power of music to unlock memory is exhibited through this documentary of nursing home residents, isolated by their debilitating dementia and mental illness. A panel of elder-care professionals will lead a question-and-answer session offering education and insight after the film. There is a suggested $5 donation.

Dark Circus Masquerade coming
A Dark Circus Masquerade will take place Oct. 30 and 31 at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are available at Animas Trading Co. and brownpapertickets.com. The event will feature a Cirque du Soleil-style party including aerial acrobatics, fire throwing, slack line performance and contortion. DJ Niko will play music. Proceeds will be donated to The Second Wind Fund of the Four Corners, which is a suicide prevention/awareness group focused on teenage suicide prevention.
Indie Lens Pop-Up at the Durango library
Independent Lens announces the launch of Indie Lens Pop-Up, a neighborhood screening series that brings people together for community-driven conversations around films from the award-winning PBS series.
Formerly known as Community Cinema, the long-running screening series has been renamed Indie Lens Pop-Up to strengthen the bond between the Independent Lens television series and local communities, and bring new energy and new audiences to the in-person events as well as online OVEE events and the broadcasts on Rocky Mountain PBS. The Indie Lens Pop-Up lineup includes a selection of new documentaries that explore issues from race to gun violence, from veterans’ issues to autism.
The Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave., will launch the series with the film, “Stray Dog,” at 6 p.m. Oct. 21.

Arts center begins Saturday Series
The Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., announces its adult performing arts “Saturday Series” featuring local specialists and working artist instructors in acting, theatrical dance, improv comedy and more.
Mona Wood-Patterson will offer “Fun with Shakespeare” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the center’s theater. Participants will learn acting tips designed to help them make Shakespeare’s immortal words spring to life. Each actor will receive a scene or monologue to play with.
Wood-Patterson is the co-artistic director of Merely Players and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Colorado Theatre Teacher of the Year, Fort Lewis College Distinguished Alumnus, and Colorado State Thespian Hall of Fame inductee. She recently directed Merely Players’ production of “Much Ado About Nothing” at James Ranch and the play “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” playing this weekend at the Durango VFW Hall.

10-Minute Play Festival to be held
The Durango Arts Center announces the fifth annual 10–Minute Play Festival to be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9 and 10 and 2 p.m. Oct. 11 in the DAC Theater, 802 East Second Ave.
The culminating event in the center’s 10-Minute Play Celebration featuring the winners and finalists of the DAC 10-Minute Play Contest, this fast-paced theatre evening offers a fully-staged grab bag of comedy and drama.
This year, DAC received a total of 117 play submissions from playwrights – emerging and professional from North America, Mexico and New Zealand. The finalists were: “Imagine That” by Stephan deGhelder of Ashville, North Carolina; “Faulty Merchandise” by Scott Gibson of Evergreen; “Misery Therapy” by Eddie Zipperer of Milledgeville, Georgia; “The Roommate” by J.H. Clayton of Atkins, Virginia; “Bitten” by Mackenzie McBride of Brooklyn, New York; and “Man, Woman, Chicken, Dog” by James Lindheim of Castle Valley, Utah. The grand prize winner, with an award for $500, was “Misery Therapy.” The People’s Choice Award, with an award of $100, was “Imagine That.”

Youth dancers sought for Nutcracker ballet
Local youth dancers, ages 6 to 15, will be included in the professional production of the State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara’s “The Nutcracker” at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. Auditions will take place Oct. 18.
A traditional ballet, “The Nutcracker” will be staged at the Community Concert Hall Dec. 11 to 13, with four performances, including, for the first time, a live orchestra – the San Juan Symphony. Dancers selected during auditions must be available to dance in all shows.
Auditions will be held on stage at the concert hall, and dancers are asked to come dressed in leotard/tights and ballet slippers, and encouraged to arrive early to warm up. The audition schedule will be:
Ballet students ages 6-8 from 10 to 10:45 a.m.
Ages 8-10: 10:45 to 11:15 a.m.
Ages 10-12: 11:15 to noon.
Ages 12-15 (bring pointe shoes if available): noon to 1 p.m.
To be considered, dancers must be able to fit into the available costumes and are required to participate in all rehearsals on Friday evenings and Saturday and/or Sunday afternoons beginning Oct. 24, as well as after school Dec. 7 to 10, and during the day Dec. 11.

Common Press hosts lecture, open house
The Mancos Common Press will present Matt Neff, director of the Common Press at the University of Pennsylvania, for a public lecture and slideshow presentation titled, “Celebrating histories and innovations through preservation, education and engagement with artists and communities” on Oct. 17 at the Mancos Community Center.
The lecture will take place at 4 p.m. followed by the Mancos Common Press open house at 5 p.m. Appetizers and light refreshments will be served.
Neff is a skilled artist, printer and educator living in Philadelphia. He was awarded the PennDesign Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2008. His work is included in many public and private collections, including the Rare Books Library at the University of Pennsylvania.

A Local Poet Show will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rochester Hotel Garden, 726 East Second Ave.
Local cowgirl Ramona Cugnini will recite poetry from her book Love knot to Lariats, while Red Greer plays fiddle. Admission is free.
