Zane Phelps did a bit of everything offensively for the Bayfield Wolverines on Thursday.
Phelps went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two stolen bases as Bayfield High School (5-0) defeated the Durango High School junior varsity team 11-9 in the junior varsity bracket of the Piedra Vista Invite in Farmington, N.M.
“Phelps had a pretty good day. He was kind of down about a game he had last week, but he has been on fire so far this year,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “It was good for him to jump out and hit the ball again.”
Bayfield had 16 hits in the game. With the game tied 9-9 going to the top of the seventh, Matthew Knickerbocker, who was 2-for-5, started a rally with a double. Phelps then drew a walk, and both runners advanced on a balk. Knickerbocker scored on a bloop single, and another run scored when the Wolverines got in a run down between first and second base, allowing Phelps to score from third.
“It wasn’t the prettiest way to score a couple of runs, but we manufactured some late runs to stay in the driver’s seat,” Qualls said.
Dillon Hoselton started the game for BHS. He pitched five innings and didn’t earn any of the four runs that crossed the plate on his watch. He had four strikeouts and three walks, and he allowed three hits.
Brody McGhehey earned the win after pitching 1 1-3 innings. He struck out and walked two and didn’t give up a hit. Taed Heydinger pitched 2-3 of an inning and had three walks and two strikeouts. He earned two of the five runs that crossed the plate while he was on the mound.
“Our pitching kind of fell apart. We walked a few extra guys, and we definitely had a few errors to give them extra outs,” Qualls said. “They scored some unearned runs to keep them in it. It was a combo of pitching and the errors; neither of them wanted to help the other.”
Heydinger was 2-for-5 with a double and a run for BHS. Chance Hine was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Adam Ridens was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Trey Lange was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
BHS is back in action against Piedra Vista’s junior varsity at 11 a.m. Friday. The Wolverines beat the Piedra Vista junior varsity team 12-11 last week.
