Storm cancels Bayfield’s Heritage Day festivities

Sheep herd trails through town
The numbers of the ear tags of the blue and red sheep are the winners of this year’s Blue Ewe contest sponsored by Pine River Valley Rotary. The Blue Ewe number is worth $500, the red is worth $250.

Saturday morning’s rain and lightning canceled Bayfield Heritage Days activities, but the sheep trailing continued on the Buck Highway.

“You can’t stop a sheep parade,” J. Paul Brown quipped as he and his son and his sheepherders brought their flock from the Wilmer Farm on County Road 501 through Bayfield, en route to the family ranch in Ignacio.

Heavy rain and lightning forced organizers to cancel the rest of the day’s festivities, but they’re hoping to make it up with an even better event in 2018.
