Four Corners School hosting celebration

Four Corners School of Outdoor Education is holding a free Grand Opening Celebration from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 20 for its Canyon Country Discovery Center, 1117 North Main St., Monticello, UT.

Guest speaker Commander John B. Herrington, the first Indigenous (Chickasaw) astronaut, will speak about the importance of education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Attendees will also hear Grammy Award-nominated “The R. Carlos Nakai Quartet,” with a Native American flautist of Navajo/Ute heritage and explore the intersection of ethnic and jazz music. Local bluegrass and folk bands will perform during the day.

Vendors and artisans will have booths selling food and crafts from the Colorado Plateau. Picnic table Jenga contests, scavenger hunts, bike rides, educational programs and other events are planned for the day.

Outdoor education for youngsters available

The Be Frank Foundation is accepting registrations for an outdoor education course for ages 11 to 14. The program will run from July 23 to 25 and is called “Be Wild! At Cascade Creek.”

The class will teach the importance of environmental stewardship, working as a team and interpersonal skills. Students will learn basic survival skills.

The trip will provide leadership opportunities for experienced outdoors enthusiasts, as well as accommodations for students who have little prior experience.
