Katzin closure is a loss for community

Katzin Music went out of business this past weekend. I am extremely sad about the loss of Durango’s only downtown music store. For over 30 years, they have provided this community with a place to get instruments, accessories, repairs and music lessons. More importantly, they provided a warm, friendly and caring place to go to talk about music or whatever else the customers’ needs were.

The first week of their going out of business sale, they advertised 20 percent off everything. It was remarkable that they sold almost half of everything in the store within the first few days. What does that mean?

We all like to find the best price for anything which is why all of us at some point have bought music, books, etc., online. The consequences of this are very clear: Local shops go out of business. My question for all of us is this: Are we willing to let downtown disappear for a 20 percent discount?

I am extremely grateful for Katzin Music and I want to commend them for all that they did for this community. May we all become mindful of what is most important to us, a discount or a place to go and find what you need locally and be treated with kindness and respect.
