After winning Tuesday’s match, the Bayfield High School volleyball team dedicated its win to the football team.
The Wolverines did Tuesday what they could not last Friday night, and that was beat the Durango Demons. Durango won Friday night’s thriller 14-6 in overtime, but Bayfield got revenge with a 3-0 win in volleyball only four days later. Adding to Tuesday’s environment was the crowd support from the DHS football players, but that only helped motivate the Wolverines.
“That honestly fueled us,” BHS junior Jade Pascale said of the crowd. “We won this game for our (football) boys.”
BHS (7-3, 3-0 3A Intermountain League) stormed back in Game 1 to win 26-24 after trailing 24-21. The Wolverines went on to win Games 2 and 3 by matching 25-19 scores.
“Not much scares them,” said BHS head coach Terene Foutz. “They played in some big tournaments in the offseason, and that type of environment breeds a level of intensity we can’t get at the local level. Now, we come into someone else’s gym and it’s just another gym. We can focus on the volleyball itself, and the kids executed.”
Pascale, daughter of Casey and Corrine Pascale, led BHS with nine kills while Maddi Foutz had eight. The passing of the Wolverines was on full display, as Courtney Bayles directed the offense with 27 assists. Bayles was finding hitters with one-on-one matchups at the net, showing off impressive eye work.
“It was really sharp,” Pascale said of the passing. “It’s so important to have our passes on so we can run our offense. It’s key to everything.”
BHS played a strong game at the net with 14 team blocks. Kylee McCoy and Ashley Mottin were key to that success. McCoy clinched the victory with a match-winning block.
“That felt so, so, so good,” said McCoy. “We did battle. It was a tough game, but we pulled through.”
BHS and DHS both had a strong game when it came to serving. The Wolverines had nine team aces. Sophomore Faith Dowling delivered several aces for the Demons (5-6, 1-1 4A/5A Southwestern League).
“She did great,” DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said of Dowling. “I thought our serves all around were very aggressive. I’m proud of that. I know when we are playing and passing the way we are capable that we are a good team.”
Timing was a little off for the Demons passing much of the night but plenty of promise was shown. Depth was also on display, as Ally Snow filled in for libero Ivy Kirwan in the third set.
“We have a deep team. I’m hoping people can come in and step up and compete for any job on the court,” Vogt said. “We’re focused on league right now. We have a strong league and know what winning that would do for us in the postseason.”
BHS has now picked up two big wins in a row after earning a 3-0 victory Saturday at Alamosa. It was the first time in two years BHS has beat Alamosa. Next up is Pagosa Springs, which swept Durango this season, and another matchup against New Mexico Class 6A powerhouse Piedra Vista, who gave BHS a 3-1 loss last week.
But the Wolverines will take a night to enjoy beating Durango, a match they’ve waited a year for since splitting a pair of five-set matches with DHS last year.
“We’ve been waiting for this game for over a year,” said Maddi Foutz, daughter of Mike and coach Terene Foutz. “I think we have a lot of confidence from this game and beating Alamosa in three. It shows all the work we put in the offseason is really paying off.”
